Switzerland’s first large solo exhibition on the internationally renowned Argentine artist Tomás Saraceno (born in 1973 in San Miguel de Tucumán, lives and works in Berlin) will be held in summer 2017.
With his room-filling installations created at the interface between art, architecture and the natural sciences, he puts forward visionary models for future forms of human coexistence that are intended to be not only more environmentally friendly and social, but also more aesthetic. As a qualified architect who also attended Thomas Bayrle’s master class at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, he is interested in structures and grids, but also in organic architecture.
For many years, Saraceno has addressed spiders and their webs. In an exchange with arachnologists, he has set up several open boxes in his studio, housing around 300 spiders. A total of twelve species are represented: solitary, semi-social and social. Saraceno lets them encounter each other, so as to observe new web structures forming again and again, which remind him of hypermodern cityscapes.
It will also be possible to see these at Museum Haus Konstruktiv. In addition, Saraceno will present works from his “Aerocene” project. This involves air-filled balloon-like objects that are powered solely by natural thermal currents (caused by solar radiation and the infrared radiation from the Earth’s surface) and are therefore not reliant on fossil fuels, inert gases, solar cells or batteries. Saraceno describes his vision of an ecological, more sustainable territory in the air as follows: “Aerocene begins now as a past-becoming-future technology. […] In the near future, it will define the age of the post-fossil-fuel travel, a pace of living that is in tune and at the whim of the wind.”
