DRIFT/ Materialism: Past, Present, Future
Nov 5 – Dec 18, 2021
New York

This solo exhibition of new and recent work by DRIFT will include sculptures from the artists’ Materialism series exploring the raw materials that make up everyday objects.
The presentation will include sculptures from the artists’ Materialism series exploring the raw materials that make up everyday objects. Expanding on this body of work, DRIFT has created new pieces representing the human body as it evolves physically through the stages of life. A Materialism related to a Volkswagen Beetle will also be featured, among other bodies of work. Manifesting the phenomena and hidden properties of nature with the use of technology, DRIFT continues to traverse mediums creating interactive pieces that illuminate parallels between man-made and natural structures through innovative processes.
This exhibition complements Superblue’s presentation of Fragile Future at The Shed, transforming the institution with sound, movement, and film in experiential installations on view September 29 – December 19, 2021. This exhibition and series of performances builds on DRIFT’s past works that inspire a reconnection to our planet and its natural processes.

DRIFT was established in 2006 by Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn, who attended the Design Academy Eindhoven together.
Their work explores the relationship between nature, technology and mankind through a process involving collaborations with scientists, university departments, research facilities, programmers and engineers. Studio Drift draws their inspiration from nature as a starting point, both in a formal and a philosophical way, while the creative process is fuelled by innovative techniques.
Their work has been exhibited at The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Museum of Art and Design, New York; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Their work is also included in the permanent collections of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
