On display is an autobiographical exhibition on the doyen of Austrian eyewear design focusing on the establishment of Robert La Roche as a successful, cosmopolitan brand in the world of fashion. The campaigns developed together with advertisers, artists, and photographers are contemporary documents of an ascending creative scene in Vienna. La Roche’s original glasses were worn by celebrated fashion models and Hollywood stars. His fans include(d) Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono. Today his glasses once again enjoy great popularity as vintage models.
A donation by the designer to the MAK collection of an extensive selection of frames, including individual pieces and series models extending from his active period as a designer since the 1970s until the sale of the brand at the end of the 1990s, is the occasion of the personal show. Supplemented by sketches, photo and film material, advertisements, and artifacts from the archive of the designer, the show provides insight into the design work and illuminates its importance on the international market for fashion and accessories. Robert La Roche is part of the Austrian tradition of renowned designers specializing in eyeglasses that commenced in the mid 20th century and formed the basis for the country’s international reputation for excellent eyewear design, whether industrial series products or handmade individual pieces.
